Melting Pot
Emmen is a municipality full of ambivalence. It contains industrial areas as well as large areas of land, values history and modernity equally, village and town meet and it is characterized by a wide variety of cultures.
The well-frequented Sonnenplatz is to become a dynamic cultural hub that offers space to linger, meet, eat, play and exchange ideas: a melting pot. We want to place a statement piece on this important square to show the openness of Emmen - we want Sonnenplatz to be young and dynamic. We are trying to achieve this through a targeted use of color, organic shapes, flooring, a wide field of vision, lighting and greenery. By creating levels and drawing them into the hill, we create space without taking up space. The different shades of orange add a splash of color to the rather grey space and the greenery not only creates shady areas, but also a more pleasant climate. The PolyPlay material used for the level and floor coverings is also sustainable. It is made from recycled materials, requires little maintenance, is waterproof, durable and inexpensive, and can withstand all weathers. The indirect lighting of all elements gives the square a pleasant atmosphere at night and also provides a safer feeling thanks to the more illuminated area. By leaving the center of the square free and the floor drawings, we open up the square and at the same time create its unity. The Melting Pot concept gives Emmen a center for a wide variety of people and the Sonnenplatz finally lives up to its purpose.
